HOW DOES THERMOGRAPHY WORK?

Infrared Thermography (IRT) or thermal imaging uses thermographic cameras to detect radiation energy in the long-infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum (9-14 µm). The infrared radiation being emitted, absorbed, and reflected is measured and used to produce images called thermograms. As all objects emit, absorb, and reflect infrared radiation, this imagery allows objects to be detectable even when no visible illumination is available. Additionally, as the amount of radiation emitted increases with temperatures, warmer objects stand out in thermograms when viewed against cooler surroundings.

As all objects are emitting, absorbing, and reflecting radiation the surface kinetic temperature is not directly measured by the infrared camera. Instead, the XT2 calculates the apparent surface temperature by first measuring the amount of irradiant flux that is detected by the sensor and then converting raw irradiance into visible thermal map data. In an operational setting, the temperature from this irradiance requires some baseline knowledge of the scene.

Thermograph imagery of a hot or warm environment will be brighter than cooler environments, so understanding baseline conditions in key. Reflective objects can interfere with overall accuracy of these measurements as more long wave infrared radiation being reflected skews the scene as more radiations is being reflected into the area. Different atmospheric conditions can also affect thermal imagery as long wave infrared radiation is absorbed and emitted, based upon air density and relative humidity. Additionally, different objects and materials have emit and reflect different energy.

However, the XT2 is aware of these conditions and factors and was designed with a suite of image enhancements features, designed by FLiR to improve the thermography. These include:
    • Digital Detail Enhancement
    • Smart Scene Optimization to enhance extremes in bi-modal scenes
    • Active Contrast Enhancement that adjusts scene contrast relative to its temperature difference
    • Information Based HEQ which compresses complex image data to create the best quality image




THERMAL PALETTES


Palettes provide different representations of thermal variation in the scene that the camera detects.
  • White Hot: Suitable for Search and Rescue operations, objects which reflect most infrared radiation will be displayed darker than objects that absorb the most radiation.
  • Black Hot: Opposite color set of White Hot.
  • Fusion: For Plain Structures such as solar panels, roofs and outdoor electrical equipment.
  • Ironbow: Similar to Fusion, but with color contrast enhanced for better color separation.
  • IceFire: Sets isotherms at both ends of the color spectrum to highlight objects that exceed/fall below the temperature range. Useful in thermal surveying applications.
